How EpaperPix works

An e-paper panel can only show a handful of inks, and it keeps whatever it last showed with the power off. EpaperPix turns your pictures into something those inks can draw, and hands each frame its next picture when it wakes.

Magnified: a picture built at 200 × 120 px for a six-colour panel. Every square is one dot of one ink.

From a picture to the wall, step by step

  1. Pictures in

Upload a photo from your phone or computer and crop it to the panel, or describe a picture for the AI. AI pictures cost tokens; choose low, medium or high effort.

  2. Built for each panel

An upload job lists your panels. Each picture is resized for every one, dithered to its inks with Atkinson dithering, and saved as a panel-ready file (.bin, or .bmp to check by eye).

  3. Slide shows

Finished pictures go to the slide shows the job names. A slide show sets the order, how long each picture stays up, and quiet hours when the frame does not change.

  4. On the wall

Give the frame your Wi-Fi and its device ID once. From then on it wakes, asks for its next picture, draws it and sleeps for as long as the slide show says.

Six ways to run a slide show

Pick a mode per slide show. You can change it at any time; the frame follows on its next wake.

Auto
Shows every picture in order, then starts again.
Random
Picks a different picture each time the frame wakes.
New
Moves forward to the newest picture and stays there.
Manual
Stays on the picture you chose until you change it.
Holding
Shows one fixed holding picture, for example while you are away.
Service
Shows the time or the weather, drawn fresh for the panel.

Supported panels

Each panel has a screen code. Upload jobs use it to build pictures at the right size and with the right inks. Pixels are the panel controller's, which is the size pictures are built at.
